That figure came from the lips of Stefan Wissenbach of Engagement Multiplier. He’s got something to sell - a feedback system which helps grow enthusiasm within a company by sharing ideas and recording progress, online. But his figures have been backed up elsewhere.
To be honest, we probably all know of organisations where most employees are coasting along, and held back by the incompetent. That leaves a small proportion of workers, and managers, who are driving things forward.
The good news is that the majority of those who are disengaged, actually want to be enthusiastic about work. So in this interview I asked Stefan what can be done. And I put it to him that his rolling appraisal system (my words, not his) was simply using information technology to study workers’ output - as the old time-and-motion people did with clipboards and pens and stopwatches, in the factories of yore... |
