It’s the thirtieth anniversary of the revolution in Romania which brought an end to Communist Party rule. You’ll be hearing lots about it in coming weeks - but perhaps not so much about Romania now. I met Romania’s richest woman recently - a charming and clever entrepreneur who started her business just three months after the Communists were overthrown. Anca Vlad told me how a former Party official tried to sabotage her - by re-labelling her office : as a toilet! |
She’s now President of her country’s largest healthcare company - the Fildas-Catena Group - worth about €800 million. And success stories like hers are what she’d like people to hear more about, instead of looking back.
Anca told me how hard she worked... First of all, out of a garage.
Just like those celebrated Californian tech-firm geniuses…
Here’s a moody photo of me in Palace Square - now Revolution Square - where Communist President Nicolae Ceaușescu realised that his grip on power was ending. In the background you can see a memorial to the people killed by his security forces, in a gathering that turned into the final protest, in Christmas 1989. I was there in Bucharest ten years ago, commemorating the 20th anniversary. |
You can hear one of my reports from back then by clicking on this button - where former dissidents were still complaining that not much seemed to have changed...
